My state did so, for a short time after the ban lifted. It was eventually lowered back to 18. The reason being the justification for being 21 to purchase a pistol, has nothing to do with crime prevention, but personal safety, as a pistol is much more dangerous to handle, than a rifle. The kneejerk reaction of raising the age to buy a gun, to retroactively exclude a criminal, is absurd and has no logical or moral basis and will have exactly zero impact on such acts. Most 'school shooters' have been too young to purchase the guns they used and the overwhelming majority of the the remainder of rampage shooters, have been 21 or older. Raising the age to purchase a gun is an empty gesture that burdens the law abiding and is in fact unconstitutional and will be struck down. The reason its unconstitutional, is because the free exercise of Rights, is tied to Age of Suffrage; in the US, that is 18. This is no different from mandating that you be 21 to vote... which Im sure many will agree is a very good idea. The reason some states are able to raise the age for pistol purchase to 21, is because one may purchase a variety of long guns at 18. Raising the age for ALL purchases to 21, completely eliminates the exercise of an enumerated Right, for Suffrage aged adults, who are legally responsible for themselves and all their actions - with Rights comes responsibility and likewise, with responsibilities, come Rights.
