@David35687 Uh, yeah. So, any vehicle capable of even a modest fraction of the speed of light, would be detectable halfway across the galaxy. Maybe even from another galaxy. The power signature and spatial displacement, would be enormous. It would be like a black hole traveling through space at relativistic speeds.

@Echoverse Real Estate Agent There's certainly an agenda. It could be a play to beg for more spending. Or, it could be that a new capability is being trickled to the public, to lessen the shock. We did the same thing with stealth; its commonplace now, but at the time, even the idea that a plane could be 'invisible' to RADAR was pretty shocking and somewhat frightening. It could also be that in the information age, security is very difficult and they're having trouble keeping some classified tech secret, so they're employing disinfo as cover, much as with the Roswell incident.

@xfloydiex If they didn't want to be seen, Id think we wouldn't see them. In fact, anyone capable of interstellar navigation, would have sophisticated enough sensors, that they wouldn't need to come anywhere near the atmosphere, to check us out.

@David35687 Here's something to consider. LASER weapons have two major constraints: 1) line of sight aiming 2) beam divergence. Aiming is accomplished by gimbaling the emitter. At long ranges, particularly in atmosphere, the beam spreads and becomes ineffective. This has been an ongoing challenge to the Strategic Defense Initiative (aka 'Star Wars') and the practicality of an orbital LASER weapon. A way to solve these problems, would be to capture and refocus the beam, at the target end, rather than at the source. This could be accomplished by an array of precision piloted drones carrying mirrors, flying in formation. This would allow 'indirect fire' and extended range, by intercepting the beam and redirecting it. Some reading: Air Force Cognitive Engine (ACE), its sister program DARPA Air Combat Evolution (ACE), MPUAV (Lockheed Cormorant), Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and X37B. Put all of that together.

@stryker0ae There would be no necessity for the aiming mirrors to be anywhere near the target. Beam spreading can be mitigated by an array of mirrors in a variable geometry. This is after all, how large telescopes work. Range and required time on target is dependent upon power output, which is increasing rapidly. There would neither be any necessity for dependence upon a single emitter; such a system could collect the beams from multiple weapons and focus them on a single target. Saying LASER weapons wont work, is a bit silly, when they are already being deployed. And then you have to assume that what you know, is at least a generation behind what's possible.
