Here's something to consider. LASER weapons have two major constraints: 1) line of sight aiming 2) beam divergence. Aiming is accomplished by gimbaling the emitter. At long ranges, particularly in atmosphere, the beam spreads and becomes ineffective. This has been an ongoing challenge to the Strategic Defense Initiative (aka 'Star Wars') and the practicality of an orbital LASER weapon. A way to solve these problems, would be to capture and refocus the beam, at the target end, rather than at the source. This could be accomplished by an array of precision piloted drones carrying mirrors, flying in formation. This would allow 'indirect fire' and extended range, by intercepting the beam and redirecting it. Some reading: Air Force Cognitive Engine (ACE), its sister program DARPA Air Combat Evolution (ACE), MPUAV (Lockheed Cormorant), Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and X37B.
Put all of that together.
