No, ARs were made specifically for military applications, but the military wasn't immediately interested. Thus the AR15 was unsuccessfully marketed to civilians for a brief period, before adoption by the military. The current 'civilian' AR pattern rifle, is the military variant, with the changes demanded by the military, to make it combat effective, minus the automatic fire capability. I can count on one hand, all the times I used anything but semi and only 1 or two of those times, was it beneficial. There are a number of special purpose rifles, built on commercial semiauto platforms. The AR15 is a military grade small arm.

I agree. I just get tired of the self-defeating, disingenuous ' its just a 1022 with scary black plastic' arguments everyone makes. Every feature on that rifle has been exhaustively engineered and tested, in a perpetual development cycle, to enhance combat lethality. Of course its a decent hunting rifle, because its made to kill shit from muzzle out to the limits of natural eyesight. The arguments people make about its nature, completely undermine their arguments about why its so vital for civilians to have access to it. I mean, if its really no different from any other semiauto rifle, its a pretty silly hill to die on. If you cant justify owning a high performance combat weapon, then remain silent in comfort that you don't have to. But, don't pick up an argument you cant carry from both ends.
Im not necessarily charging you with making such arguments, Im just explaining why I feel compelled to call some people morons, when they start kneejerking and calling me a 'Liberal'(whatever thats supposed to mean) and a commie and a gun grabber, etc., because I recognize that the AR is a military grade weapon... which is precisely why 99% of those people want one. Ugh.

Your reading comprehension leaves some to be desired, or your integrity does. You are no doubt aware of the leveling phenomenon, where soldiers tend to use about 80% of their ammunition, regardless of how much they have, or intensity of engagement? And no, no one is 'suppressing' anything, they're just burning powder, because it feels good. The most automatic fire, comes from the least disciplined units. Which is why, as I noted and you notably failed to address, DoD has high interest in a 'smart' system to command restrict firing rate on GI rifles.
'liveleak' Nice, is that the new 'COD', or 'moms basement' ad hominem?

513th MI-BDE. May '91 I was assigned to a survey and inspection team, documenting Iraqi targets hit with precision ordnance, including TLAM, AGM84E, Paveway and GBU variant guided weapons. We had frequent street level engagements with Republican Guard, Iraqi Security Services, looting gangs and Iraqi rebels. My first three way, was with Iraqi security forces and Iraqi rebels - When a half dozen rebels outside, tried to assault the compound we were inspecting, Abdul exploited the opportunity, to try and stop our leaving a site with documents and materiel. 10 man team: myself, a kid from ONI, a 'civilian observer'(spook), a 'civilian analyst'(pretty sure from Raytheon) and 6 man SF escort. We rolled in 2 Vs and a deuce. I started with a M16A2 'Destroyer of Worlds' 5.56mm, Gas Operated, Magazine Fed, Machine Rifle and finished with the brand new M4 Carbine(which I hated).
