@RhinoXpress Judo teaches you how to stay on your fucking feet, which is your #1 priority in a fight . Not roll in the dirt, like an idiot.

@naespelunca Actually they're rooted in the same art and split. Of course what most people know as 'jiujitsu' is actually BJJ, or even Americanized BJJ. Authentic jiujitsu has a lot more in common with judo, but is rarely seen. What makes BJJ attractive is that from day one, a student can go full intensity/full contact, with relative safety and thus progress very quickly; whereas judo spends a great deal of the first year, on physical conditioning and learning how to not get hurt.

Judo isnt just about getting thrown down. Getting sent to the ground sucks, but if you have any idea what you're doing, its manageable. Getting thrown into a tree, into a lamppost, onto steps, into a chair, tripped face first onto a bar etc. happens so fast, so violently and is so disorienting, it's impossible to deal with... and looks like your own clumsy fault.

@Shadowrulzalways Yes. The throws and sweeps in shorin ryu is what got me interested in judo. I started boxing shortly after picking up karate. Now, my personal style is basically shorin ryu karate, with boxing strikes and judo grappling. The main difference is that judo is fairly passive and more elegant, leading an opponent into the right moment; whereas the karate approach for the same technique is to just brute force it. Blend the two and the result is devastating.
