Its good to see that someone else is will ing to stand outside the dichotometric blame game - Left blames guns and the NRA and the Right blames 'mental illness' and violent TV shows. None of those things are new; one of the all time most popular TV shows was the Rifleman(late 50s), where Chuck Connors rapid fired his high capacity rifle, shooting down over 250 men, often 3 - 5 at a time... right in front of his adolescent boy. The NRA has been around for nearly 150 years; mental illness, since at least Greek Classical Period. Rampage shootings, have only been fashionable for the past 30 years.

AR15 is not more effective in rampage murder, than a pistol - Virginia Tech and Lubby's are two of the most 'successful' rampages in history and they(among others) were committed with a 9mm pistol. The overwhelming majority of victims are executed at close contact. The reason the AR15 has become the weapon of choice, is the coverage. When its not a AR15, the media still drones on about the AR15, if only to say it wasnt a AR15. These people are on a mission to commit the ultimate transgression against society, so they choose the weapon that the media SELLS to them in mass murder infomercials, as the ultimate, purpose-built murder machine. They talk endlessly about the carnage and devastation and how fast it shoots and the inescapable meatseeking bullets. And EVERYONE fights over it. Seriously, people cant understand that THIS is why they choose a high performance 500m rifle they have no experience with, to shoot unarmed people at 5 feet, as they hide under a desk?
