  2.  @emailhit  Depends what you mean by 'MMA'? What people often refer to as 'MMA' has become kind of a brand of BJJ, with some striking. Actual MMA, though, is just any mixture of different martial arts, so really, anything you do could be 'MMA'. I think boxing and judo is the most powerful combination, for a realworld skillset. I know a lot of people will say BJJ, but the attractive qualities of BJJ, are also some of the worst for beginners. In particular, its relatively safe to go 100% on your first day. So, you're rock n rollin', learning actual effective skills, before you've learned any disciple or wisdom to carry them responsibly. In judo, you spend months just learning how to fall, so you don't cripple each other, when the real training starts. Boxing teaches you humility and responsibility. When you start boxing, you are going to get... your... ass... kicked, for a long time. You'll learn the price of fighting and you'll learn the most important skill you can ever have, for self defense - how to endure a beating. You'll also discover confidence that you can take care of yourself. In a real fight, the last thing you want to do, is get on the ground; another major point against BJJ. Judo will teach you how to stay on your feet, how to get to your feet and it will teach you restraint , because the reality is, simply shoving someone, could potentially end in death. Now, if you just need to be able to look in the mirror and say 'I can fight', which I respect, the solution is pretty simple. Pick out a couple punches, a high percentage throw and a simple easy kick, all that you can do right now, at your current fitness level. Practice them until you can do any one, or mix them into combos, at will. You'll be able to win or escape 99% of confrontations you'll ever have. I hope thats a useful answer.
