I have a feeling they don't have ballistics. They specified shell casings, referring to extractor/ejector markings and firing pin impressions. That, as standalone evidence, has been largely discredited. There are a couple of exceptions in that a weapon thats been modified, or has certain unique features, such as a home manufactured firearm and or a malfunctioning firearm can make uniquely identifiable markings. In short, the more unique the firearm, the easier it is to exclude others.
The reason I think they may not have ballistics, is because he apparently used Full Metal Jacket ammunition, which will go right through and keep going a significant distance, ending up in storm drains, in parked cars that drive away, etc. So the bullets would likely be difficult, to impossible to recover. Then theres the problem of linking a bullet found a block away across the street, to the crime scene.
Worst case is they have the bullets and they dont match the weapon. As a home manufacture from aftermarket parts, there is no way to tell if the barrel has been replaced. A replacement barrel is around $70, and can be replaced in seconds with no tools. Removing and installing the barrel is a normal function of the cleaning process. He certainly had the means to have multiple spare barrels.
