  4. Every feature of the AR was developed to enhance lethality. To say otherwise is dishonest. Im guessing youve never seen anyone shot with a 556. I dont recall anyone walking it off. DoD released a study years ago, that showed the 556 to be equally lethal with the 762, inside 200m. The AR15 absolutely is a civilian version of the M16. My pre '86 Colt, is convertible to the M16 with a drop-in component - it can be converted with the same ease with which you would clean it. The AR is so similar to the M16, that a provision of the Ominbus Crime Bill, was to mandate that civilian receivers not have the selector channel milled out so that they would not be 'readily convertible .However, you may simply finish milling the receiver of a 'milspec' AR to true milspec. Dishonesty about the AR's lethality and effectiveness helps no one. If you cant justify your need for a high performance, combat capable weapon, then its better for everyone, for you to remain silent about it and let the other side do all the rationalizing and lying.

  5. +stephen Toth My point is that the only significant difference between an AR and an M16, is the giggle switch. The auto/burst functionality is not what makes the M16 a combat effective weapon. I can count on one hand, every time I used anything but semiauto, anywhere but the range. The point about its designed lethality, is that everyone is trying to make the argument that all of the AR's signature features, are cosmetic and that its no different than any other rifle. If that were true, the Marines would use the Mini-14 and people wouldnt be crapping themselves and barking about revolution, over not being able to get an AR. The AR is a high performance battle rifle and Dod, has in fact, explored the option of semiauto only variants, for general issue. The ONLY reason they dont, is logistics and cost - the semiauto cost the same as the auto and on the occasion that autofire is needed, they would need to get that capability issued to the field. Theyve also explored electronic selectors, so that an officer could authenticate autofire, when needed. The point is that trying to minimalize the AR as simply 'scary looking' is no less deceitful than that other side's demonization for its ease of use. But considering that gun rights only ever shrink and never grow, Id be very wary of tactics that might blow up in my face. You simply cant win the 'its just a rifle' argument, but the argument that self-defense and exercise of a fundamental Constitutional Right, should be difficult, expensive and hard to access, for the average American, is winnable.

  6. +Al Brautigam Im in LE education (fiearms trainer) and we get some information thats rarely reported. Not unavailable, though - check in on some LE forums, theres usually a details bulletin from the local LEA and or FBI circulating. Anyway, with the exception of a few spontaneous acts, they typically use FMJ, whatever is available cheapest, in the largest numbers - keep in mind, these guys are often on a budget. The media also ambiguously reports 'injuries' in a way to associate them with GSW. While they are certainly attributable to the act, its dishonest to assign trips, falls and general chaotic environment injuries to the weapon.

  8. Which really doesnt help the argument that its just an innocent plinker that just looks really scary. Its a rifle the military found perfect for the most intense warfare, since WWII.
