'Getting it' is the core issue. Math is an abstraction, just like music; and just like music, you either 'get it' or you don't. The problem is that people who don't get it and have to struggle through, don't become math teachers and so they have no idea how to teach . Most math classes are simply demonstration and you 'get it' and have a benign experience, or you don't and its Hell . My Highschool algebra teacher just had a projector, she demonstrated and if anyone asked a question, the answer was a 'why do I have to suffer morons' facial expression and tell them to get with someone after class. Her class average grade, was 40. Shes a PhD... and is now an accountant at her husband's car dealership. It makes me a little sick to think how many lives she ruined.
