First, we need to clarify some language jam =\= malfunction. A jam is a mechanical failure, that usually necessitates some type of disassembly/maintenance to correct. A malfunction is remediated by unloading and reloading the weapon.
Jams are not common amongst most modern firearms, but malfunctions can be. Some feeding devices, like magazines and cylinders, can jam and require disassembly, or manipulation with some kind of tool, to correct. An example of this, is a revolver jam I had, where lint from a padded case got into the cylinder gap and the cylinder wouldnt advance, or swing out. I had to use tools to get it back into service. The AK47 rarely malfunctions, but is prone to jamming in the trigger group and in the bolt. Drum magazines are notorious for jamming and causing malfunctions.
