No, they are right. Thats why we have police. Violence must be commissioned and sanctioned by the state, via consent of the governed as a body. Individual acts of violence are destructive to the fabric of civilization. This killing did not protect anyone, it did not stop an active murder; it produced what an angry mob viewed as Justice. Even if you were there, you don't know all the facts. Who was killed? What kind of person were they? Do we know that the shooter wasn't in some way justified, or non-culpable? Would it change your view if, for example, the person shot had violated the shooter's sister? We have only the word of a vigilante mob as to the events and motives.
Indeed, Ive witnessed street stonings like this and no one 'has to' to do it. They chased him, cornered him, injured him so that he couldn't escape and killed him. That is vengeance, not public safety, not even Justice. Vengeance.
