Meanwhile my school teacher.... "Pi is 22/7" I swear with every science video I watch on Youtube, I hate my school more and more.

Yes a lightyear is a distance that light would travel in a year. So it can be thought of as both distance or duration.
1
@lequedicatsamarge4228 Because knowledge is passed down the generations it is important that you pass down the correct knowledge. It is considered "basic" knowledge because its all around us and its easy to learn. Sure knowing that stars are bigger than the moon may not change your life but it shows that you have good understanding of facts which crucial for scientific discovery.

This immediately made me remember Mehdi's (ElectroBOOM) Right hand rule dance 😂
1
They're actually likes and dislikes from the video updating automatically. 1/3 means like, 1/2 means dislike
1
My biggest disappointment is not the lack of knowledge about space but the amount of people that think astrology and astronomy are interchangeable.

To answer "What is the probability that it came up heads?" The objective outcome of a fair coin toss will always be 1/2. She will always be woken up on a Monday regardless of the toss result, but she will be only woken up on 50% of Tuesdays. Thus 1/2. Now if you wake her up and ask "Given you're awake, what is the probability that the last toss result was a heads?" To this the answer is 1/3 assuming the sleeping beauty knows when she'll be woken up, but the video doesn't really mention anywhere if she knows on what conditions she will be woken up.

Time to Invert binary trees for 10,000 hours straight.
1
I missed this videos where you go out and ask people science questions!
1
Aaaaaaand he changed the title.
1
Is this an April Fools
1
This can be solved simply if the question is worded better? "What is the probability that the coin toss was heads?" Answer: 1/2 "What is the probability that the coin toss that woke you up was a heads?" Answer: 1/3 It really boils down to what context you ask and answer the question in.
1
It should be easier to run a simulation using something like Python
1
Thinking the same thing. If both clocks are at 0 and only start ticking when light hits them then why do we need to worry about synchronisation? Just subtraction the time of clock 2 from clock 1, no?
1
Exactly my first thought! But only such object that exists is a blackhole so its hard to verify.
1
Agree this thing would also help you stay out of jail
1
Imagine cutting the shapes out of the question paper during the exam to find the right answer.
1
I don't see how this is related to recursion
1
I just realised the title of the video changes based on the likes and dislikes!
1
Read a lot of news articles about this and they were pretty meh, but Derek here explained what we see and why we see it in such simple terms even a kid can understand!
1
I have watched so much space content on YouTube that the question at first seemed like a trick question.
1
Bingo! The answer changes depending on how the question is worded.
1
I want more of those videos where you would go out and ask people the most basic questions that they take for granted, Then proceed to blow their minds. The best one was "Where Does The Sun Get Its Energy?" As for my all time favorite, It will always be the explanation of the first ever image of a blackhole, The way you explain things is just amazing.
1
I am gonna watch CoolWorlds FTL video now because the space time diagrams actually make sense to me after this video. 😅
1
Exactly, I feel like he is intentionally trying to confuse the viewers when he himself said at the start that it depends on what questions you ask. If you ask her "what is probability that the result of the coin toss that woke you up was a heads" answer should be 1/3 If you ask her "what is the probability that the coin toss was a heads" answer should be 1/2 Her waking up more than once after the same toss result isn't tied to the probability of the toss.
1
@shade0636 The first question puts the sleeping beauty in the context and assumes that she knows on what conditions she will be woken up but won't be given any other information, like what day is today. In that scenario its 3 possibilities, It was a Heads, and its a Monday It was a Tails, and its a Monday It was a Tails, and its a Tuesday Thus 1/3 chance of waking up after a heads The second question assumes she knows nothing, not even the conditions on how she will be woken up, so from her point of view a coin toss will always have a 1/2 chance of heads. I wish Derek made it more clear if she knows about the initial conditions because there is no mention of that in the video so we have to make some assumptions.
1
This video is proof that we are still talking about the 5th postulate.
1
Derek your aiming protocols makes this seem like a highschool science project, GPS really? You could've used IR lights or lasers to pinpoint the location, thats also what the military uses.
1
Exactly, I am surprised about how little thought was put into aiming, which was supposed to be the backbone of this whole project.
1
10 year old me would ask, why isn't there a laser taped on the nose of the rod for aiming down?
1
Aliens: Welp, looks like we gotta wait a few millions year more before saying hi.
1
Exactly! To word it better, "Given the reason you're awake, what is the probability that the coin toss was a heads?"
1
I love that this format is back. I missed old videos like this!!!
1
Can someone ELI5 Ana Humphrey's project?
1
Besides causing confusion, I don't think so.
1
I wish you would do more videos like this Derek.
1
The force you put in at one end would propagate at the speed of light.
1
Exactly 😂
1
Here is a stupid aiming idea that would've worked miles better than the GPS one. Have the sand castle on a RC trolley, fly the helicopter vertically only, when the desired altitude is reached, slide the trolley to the exact spot where the helicopter took off. and of course have fins on the rods lol
1
Does the sleeping beauty know that her waking up depends on the coin toss?
1
If you thumbs down it will actually show up in the title.
1
@KX36 Because YouTube constantly filters likes and dislikes which it thinks came from bots.
1
Please do more of this type of videos!
1
Imagine the world if everyone owned up to their mistakes like Derek.
1
I think he intentionally mixed two questions to gain some engagement. There could be two questions and both have different answers. "What is the probability that the coin toss was heads?" Answer: 1/2 "What is the probability that the coin toss that woke you up was a heads?" Answer: 1/3 The second answer is assuming she knows she'll be woken up on a Tuesday if it was a tails but not given any information about it being a Tuesday.
1
1:34 There you answered it yourself. Its not a controversial Math or Philosophy problem. Its just a Linguistics problem.
1
The escape velocity is c on the very edge of the Schwartzchild radius. If you move slightly inwards, it's greater than c.
1
How can humans be so stupid and genius at the same time is beyond me.
1
That depends on what the question is "What is the probability that the coin toss was heads?" Answer: 1/2 "What is the probability that the coin toss that woke you up was a heads?" Answer: 1/3
