People don't realise how massive a real alien encounter would be. It would essentially change our understanding of everything and our way of life.

@madduckling4436 I am not trying to hate religion here, but religion has always been a belief system centered around one's self, its the idea that if I worshipped god he'll do right by ME, or the god has a plan for ME. So when and if we encounter an intelligent alien civilization and learn that they don't have the same idea of god or religion it would be very upsetting at the least for a lot of people. Again this is a big if and you're free to believe what you want but an encounter with intelligent aliens will change us forever. For better or worse, only time will tell.

@Actinide5013 If such an advanced civilization exists, shooting a nuke at them would be the equivalent of shooting a nerf dart at them.

@viksta6834 That would still be huge. Even finding a small microbe would solidify the fact that complex life beyond Earth is possible and the fact that we haven't found any means we haven't looked hard enough.
