Free VPNs are useless, because if you're getting a VPN free, then YOU and YOUR DATA are the product. To run a VPN is expensive.

Come to brax.me and look for the blog room #setup4privacy where some of us talk about exactly how we uniquely setup our computers - the new ones. You're right in that we need something for people who have "inherited" a used computer. You're already ahead that lots of "blotware" was taken off by your ex-husband - so don't be afraid. Just search to find "computer name" and change it to something beside his or your name for starters. I downloaded "Search everything" and found it more useful than Cortana.

Am thinking we might publish the notes we take in the comments...?

@Grey_World1 a "Sandbox" is a partitioned area that cannot affect the rest of your computer, used for trying out things that might affect it. For instance, some people have their anti-virus installed in a sandbox so a virus can't use it to gain access to the rest of the computer and mess it up. A "Windows box" is just slang for a computer with a version of Windows installed.

Well, isn't Win7 no longer updated? Use Win7 if you have programs that don't work on Win10 perhaps?

Any words in any language are in the hacking database, no matter which language.

I had one windows laptop that had too many partitions - I think these were made to prevent Linux from being easily installed. I had to figure out which partitions were really "necessary" and which could have their contents copied to other partitions in order to install Linux. It took lots of research and was a real pain.

@Hezzey yes, I have a newbie guest account, with the protections in place so they can't affect the rest of the installation

yes, it's a "ransomeware" scam. They say something is wrong with your computer, get you to download what they supply to you. Then what you have just downloaded now truly ruins your computer. Then they offer to "fix" what they just trashed for $$ .. It's a total scam.

@αηυση smart - thanks for referring to what Rob had already done

Because he must also program for windows users - he's a developer who needs his inventions to work on many platforms.

Rob is a programmer who must have all of the different OS so he can try out his programming on them.
