I wish I could remember where I heard this, I thought it was here (guess not), but I think it was maybe a NASA test pilot pushing their SR to the limit and hit a barrier at around Mach 3.6 or 3.65. Which that speed caused the engines to stall in a unique way that I can't recall. I want to say he said compressor stall, but I'm second guessing my recollection there since I didn't think the turbines were really in play at those speeds, since at those speeds the engine was in RAMJet "bypass mode". So yea, to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately. But at least I'm being honest and not trying to claim this "matter of factly"!
