It really is an interesting notion, as I've come to realize...
Because now you can have one epic plane, except... it's spread across two airframes. Meaning the piloted plane can remain super maneuverable or fast, as it isn't burdened with X, Y, or Z since that's been moved over to the wingman drone!
In other words, you can have an "E/A-18 Growler" capable combo, but now each single pilot also remains just as lethal as an F/A-18! That's in addition to whatever pieces of ordinance the wingman drone is packing... (I use those two purely as an example, due to the differences between them.)
Then there's also the other benefits mentioned in the video, like the ability to act as a "shield" for the piloted plane, or the fact it will be cheaper since it won't need to be equipped with all the bells and whistles a conventional combat aircraft needs...
Basically, it's sort of like having a "Tactical Donkey" / "Combat Mule" π Which I imagine, during the early endangerments where these are first deployed, it's probably going to be a matter of "ignore the drone, lock onto the piloted aircraft!!"... That is, until enemies start to realize that the wingman is almost an equal threat, and they shouldn't discriminate, just lock whichever and fire! π
And if the US/allies maintain a huge technological advantage in this sector, future conflicts are going to be reeeal depressing for the instigating foes! π
[edit: fixed my embarrassing error, a typo, and made a small adjustment to the second sentence to make it comes across slightly less idiotic... lol]
