@teresamccartney1309 haha They STILL do it, even when they know their calls have been intercepted! They want to talk to friends and loved ones, and this is the only way they have. In sure if people had cellphones in WWII, there'd have been this sort of stuff happening as well, since it's not like you can use encrypted comms to call home... heh
(that is to say, you wouldn't be allowed to)
But yea, on the Insights from Ukraine channel, he plays intercepted calls almost every day. You end up recognizing some voices, or in one case you know their names. The one youngish soldier calling his GF (maybe wife), they've been intercepted a few times and aired on his channel. Then more recently when he called, the GF was panicked because she saw the video, telling him about it and how we ("they") know everything. How we know both of their names, job, address, and even what they look like because he had shown us pictures.
You'd think the call would end right there, but nope! lol
He got upset with her, for always wanting him to tell her where he is and what's going on, saying that "see, this is why I can't do that, so don't ask me that stuff anymore, because you know I'm not going to keep stuff from you or lie!".
So that was the new plan lol Otherwise, business as usual! Literally! She has some sort of clothing business and she started telling him about new stuff. heh
"It is what it is", as he said, in regards to their calls being intercepted. It mattered, just... not enough to keep them from calling each other. 😋

@escutus Yea, and, he probably has GPS on by default, just to make it easier! (though, I'm not sure if the carrier has access to that, or just "Emergency Services"... 🤔)
Also this just occurred to me, too!! 🤣
Either... Ukrainians have a standing order to keep paying their cellphone bills even after they've been stolen, just so that the thief (Russian soldier) will be able to help out (by giving away their position)...
OR
Ukraine's telecom company/ies exempted all Ukrainians from having to pay their bills during this conflict; therefore, (potentially) any phone with the carrier's SIM will work, no matter what.
I know the gov't did tell everyone to inform them of their number, if (*cough* when) your phone has been stolen, but I never even thought about the bill aspect until now... 😋 (furthest thing from my mind when watching news about this conflict! heh)
✊💙💛
(edit: fixed major grammatical errors 🤦♂️ oof lol)

@jeep146 In this case, no. In quite a number of other cases, they actually have. (at least based on the many calls the Insights channel has shared)
You have to keep in mind that the more cell towers there are, the easier it is to triangulate where a cellphone roughly is. BUT ALSO, these soldiers end up using these phones a lot, for texting as well no doubt, and so over the course of days, weeks, months... A very detailed picture gets painted of who this person is. Pair that with the fact that in a lot of calls, at least a first name gets shared, sometimes a surname as well. In those instances, you now have pretty much everything you need when it comes to determining who might have committed a war crime. Or at the very least, who was in the vicinity and could have witnessed a fellow soldier commit them.
(this sort of thing has already helped them in identifying culprits, but I don't know the specifics of "how", so everything above is just my own deductive reasoning from knowing enough about the technical side)
