I'm not at all qualified to answer this, but I do know that one of the primary disadvantages is the fact there is no throttling. Once it's lit, it's full throttle, the entire time. Which as I understand it is also why they're primarily used for boosters (these days), as they get the rocket off the ground and going at a fair speed before being going supersonic. If you watch the SpaceX streams, they throttle down for "Max Q" (max dynamic pressure) which is when they're passing through the sound barrier and that's the point the entire assembly experiences its highest stress load ('mechanical stress' only, I think). Then again, that might not be relevant to a solid rocket... :} So take this part with a grain of salt heh

Tell that to Boeing and the SLS :( Their motto is, do it right on the first launch, and spend as much goddamn money as humanly possible making sure everything is perfect. (problem being, they're using simulations, and those results being correct relies heavily on the simulations testing those parameters, being flawless... and well, Starliner has shown that their methodology is not flawless.... oops!)
