Joking aside, back then an interest in space wasn't sexy, or even cool. Astronauts, sure, but that's also celebrity status at play.
I'd argue it's only within the last 10, maybe 15 years, that space and science (therefore, physics) has become popular, ie sexy AND cool! A lot of which is thanks to SpaceX, but also with that span of time where there were a bunch of shows being made which featured Michio Kaku and Neil deGrasse Tyson, etc. It was Michio that made my friend decide to transfer schools, and she even managed to get into his class. (Though, unfortunately it was all taught through his assistant.)
