@homomorphic While there's certainly nothing that stands out about Falcon 9, the fact it can now land itself and be reused, was something just about the entire rocket industry considered a fool's errand to pursue...
But here we are.
Is that bot the exact opposite behavior of what you're claiming? lol
Lots of changes had to be made to their golden goose in order to facilitate attempting to land, but they still made them despite the fact it could sacrifice reliability. That's not something the rocket industry or their clients take lightly. That'd be like you booking a flight on Spirit Airlines, if they suddenly started to have a 1 in 15 crash rate... lol
So yea, I'm quite skeptical that SH+SS are only being worked on in order to keep Musk busy and out of the adult's hair. A big point for me saying that is the fact that there's a launch/catch tower going up at Cape Canaveral. Because if this was just busy work as you claim, then we both know that Shotwell would've reigned him in and told him:
"No, you don't need one in Florida! We built one for you in your sandbox at Boca, you can play with that one, you don't need another one! I said no, and that's final..."
😁
Even if the project started off that way once upon a time, it's clearly exceeded their expectations, turning it into a legitimate project now. Something that even the Spruce Goose might have become, had it succeeded...... or been a modern-day Boeing venture, where those writing the funding checks don't care either way. 😏

As a former grease monkey, I facepalmed SO HARD when the second SLS launch was scrubbed due to the 8in hydrogen filling hose's seal blowing out... WHICH THEY ALREADY SUSPECTED TO BE DAMAGED DURING THE FIRST SCRUB!! 😐
Seriously... Unless they're wanting SLS to result in a Wickwick Event so that they can move on (something a lot of us are hoping for, and many secretly hoping for), that was an EXTREMELY half-assed and armature call to make, to not have that seal replaced after the first scrub! Any industry, where a bad seal is found, as long as the repair doesn't mean shutting down a huge assembly line which would mean a massive amount of money lost to shut it down... that sort of thing would be fixed! After all, they'd already mentioned that they keep those parts on hand.
(and yes, I know it's not as simple as replacing the o-ring on a kitchen sink [although, I'd argue that can be a real PITA lol] but we're talking about a billions of dollars in hardware)
I dunno, maybe I'm overreacting, on account of SLS already being a huge embarrassment... It just feels like Armature Hour when that thing keeps failing, every time it tries to take a step forward... 😫
Just take it behind the barn and leave it with me, I'll put it out of its misery! 😏
