  1. Slack security around the Royal family is nothing new. During WW II, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was visIting King George VI. She asked about security arrangements and the King offered a demonstration. He crossed the drawing room and pressed a concealed panic button which was supposed to summon a crack army protection unit. The sovereigns then went to the window to observe the results. There were none. Remember that this was in the middle of the war with german paratroopers dropping out of the sky all over Europe. Somewhat embarrased, the King pressed the button again. After several minutes, the crack security unit bagan to wander into the courtyard, adjusting their dress, scratching themselves and wondering what the fuss was about. I believe that H.M. later gently suggested that certain changes be made.
