The Ottoman Turks conquered the entire Balkan region to the Danube and even beyond , crowning their successes with the capture of Constantinople in 1453 , an event that stunned the western world . They occupied most of Hungary ; Vienna was under threat . Where would they stop ? The Christian world , both western and Byzantine , had certainly every reason to fear Islam .

The maps show at least a dozen states of the first rank which have been constructed by Turkish peoples, and another dozen built by Turkish leaders, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with the assistance of a military aristocracy of their own race.
