  1. As long as an ideology exists, there are going to be at least a few people out there who subscribe to it. But the fact that the only communists in the public debate are people who are relatively marginal like Ash shows that it doesn't really have any kind of significant following any more, certainly not compared to, say, fifty years ago, where it was fairly popular on university campuses, and communist parties were major forces across western europe.

  2. Your definition of what constitutes 'the left' has to be extremely narrow for that to be anything like true. There have been plenty of socialists who are staunch anti-communists. Clement Attlee for one.
