And it is fairly obvious that unfettered capitalism can and has done the same thing the world over. Venezuela operates a form of socialism that relies heavily on ideas like state ownership and the siege economy. That was something sections of the left advocated for in the 1980s over here, but that has long since been off the agenda. The consensus now is that state ownership should be limited to 'natural monopolies' which are relatively cheap to take back into public hands, like public transport. Otherwise, the emphasis is more on ideas like regulation and cooperative ownership to raise living standards.

Bad attempts at socialism are still socialism, but there needs to be a recognition that there are wild differences between the many different strands of it. Socialism can mean anything from dictatorships where there is a huge role for state ownership like the USSR or Venezuala, too northern european democracies that operate mixed economies like Germany and Scandinavia. Leftists in this country tend toward the latter model. It can also be reasonably argued that there are socialist aspects to the UK economy too. It is not a black and white thing, it is a spectrum.

Part of the reason Owen is not supporting him is that he has totally failed to get those ideas across to the electorate. Why does he have to have ulterior motives if he doesn't support Corbyn, cant people just have honest disagreements?
