Tell me, which industries would be state owned under Labour? The only nationalisations they are proposing are for the 'natural monopolies' like gas, water, and rail. State ownership of industry has been dead as an idea on the left for quite a while.

McCluskey is nowhere as left wing (he actually wanted to support Burnham) or as powerful (Unison is now Labour's biggest union, and they can defeat Unite easily with the help of the GMB, as often happens) as he makes out. He just has an interest in building up an image as a bogeyman of the right, because it means it will get him re-elected.

Where are you pulling those three separate figures of £500 billion out of? The manifesto pledged £250 billion over five years. McDonnell pledged 500 billion the previous year, but I don't think there was a specified time period for how long that would be spent over, and either way it didn't make it into the manifesto. Also, they weren't saying they would cut overall spending, they said they would balance day to day spending- i.e. not borrowing for capital investment, which is a principle widely supported by economists, and what they were talking about when they bring out the 250 billion figure. What Labour are saying is that things that don't come under that-scrapping tuition fees for instance, will be properly funded out of general taxation.
