  1.  @Drachinifel  Thank you. Naval history isn't my thing. I read WW2, Russo-German. (I am a dilettante). I'm skeptical because I wasted 20 years (1975 thru 1995) reading what was available. And what was available, came from 'the German generals'. And then the USSR collapsed. And they opened the archives to western historians. (I think they were desperate for dollars). And I learned not to believe everything I read. Now there's the internet. Please pass the salt.

  2. I've read that as soon as the news of the Battle of Hampton Roads reached the British Admiralty, they scrapped their 'building plans' for the RN. I've only read this in one place...so I take it with a grain of skeptical-salt. Can someone confirm or refute?
