When Gehres took command of the Franklin from Shoemaker he addressed the crew and, in regard to the Oct-44 kamikaze attack, supposedly said: ‘It was your fault because you didn’t shoot [the kamikaze] down. You didn’t do your duty; you’re incompetent, lazy and careless. Evidently you don’t know your jobs and I’m going to do my best to shape up this crew!’ . @stevenhall8891 I don't understand how such a toxic personality made its way up the ladder of command. How did the USN not see him for what he was?

@Gentleman...Driver The USN seems to enjoy rewarding their loosers. The guy who ran BuOrd (and gave us the Mk14 torpedo-nightmare) was put in charge of nuke testing in the Pacific after the war. Halsey, after blundering at Samar, and then killing hundreds of sailors in typhoons, was given a 5th star after the war. And that is just the view from the very top of the ranks. . I think perhaps, this has something to do with the history of naval command. Set out on a mission. Isolated for months/years. Acting on their own. Nobody to judge them. This may contribute to how 'defective commanders' are treated by the top brass. . Armies don't have this problem because fragging is so easy.

@gneisenau89 Gehres arrived AFTER the Franklin got hit. He had nothing to do with any 'heroic effort'. The top brass of the USN has always suffered from moral-rot when exercising leadership. Ask Captain McVey of the Indianapolis. Ask the 'gay sailor' in turret-2 of the Iowa.
