At Normandy, on D-Day, the old battle wagons were just offshore, shooting over open sights, at targets on the beach.
As men were approaching the beach in landing craft, the 14 inch rounds were going inland, directly over their heads.
Supposedly, they observed spouts of water, rising up to the shell....in a line, following the shell as it headed towards the beach.
I've only read that in one source. Generally, I'd like to read such bizarre things in two places before I give them a lot of credence.
