@danielbarreiro8228 Your description of a right angle as 100 grads is correct, and it’s an attempt to make angle measures more friendly in base ten. However, the words “decimal degrees” has a completely different meaning. Decimal degrees refers to writing the fractional part of one degree in decimal form rather than in minutes and seconds.

Or countries that use the metric system for everything except temperature, like Guatemala.

@kenoliver8913 Yes, but 60 has lots of factors, including 3; 10 has only two proper factors, other than 1.

It crashed into Mars. Yes, along the way someone used US Customary units. IIRC, the problem was not that two different units were used; the problem was the conversion factor used did not have enough significant digits. By the time the probe reached Mars the accumulated round-off error was much bigger than the tolerance needed.

In commercial aviation now, are fractions of a degree measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds or in decimal degrees?
1
Most surveying historically in the USA used degrees, minutes, and seconds for angle measures, not grads.

Couldn’t a single pilot turn off such a system and keep the 2nd pilot locked out if they intend to crash?

And to use enough significant digits in any conversion so that by the time you get to Mars the accumulated round-off error is within tolerance.
