As always, a great review, and it reveals this car's weaknesses, as a crossover, it's more car than SUV, or small SUV, it's not really even utility as it's ground clearance looks to be not much better than a typical passenger car these days. Take a look at the original, they had ground clearance, and were MUCH capable of lighter off road duty than this thing with the running boards. So why call it an crossover when it's not much more than a simple car?

Nathan, found this channel a couple of months ago, and having seen Roman's review of this car at the press event, and now yours, you note some of the things I noted in the DCCT variant of the Easy I drove a few weeks back, and yes, that tip in with the throttle is a bit slow from a dead stop. Get something like a Go pedal to tighten the throttle response a bit, and it'd be much better I think. Wished they'd kept the sport mode from the smaller 500 for that purpose. Oh well.

  3. First of all Roman, welcome to my neck of the woods, and yes, it's quite sunny here during the summer months. :-) Were you on Bainbridge Island? If so, I thought you might've been there. As to the Jag, and many newer cars in recent years, much of the exhaust note etc, are artificially created these days, lame. I wish automakers would try to educate us "muricans" about driving and what to expect in a car, other than soft, squishy rides that take no effort on their part.

  4. Nice review Nathan on this car. One thing I've noticed is they've seem to have shrunk the backseat leg room on this one, in comparison to earlier 3's or better yet, my Mazda Protege5, it has scads of room in the back seat, at a bit of a compromise in the way back area. This just looks like they squished the back area in all directions, and whomever is back there gets shafted. I'm not sure I'd buy this, but love Mazda's though for driving dynamics.

I was gonna say, this could be testing for the new 500X, which I think is based on the 500L platform, and may have the same 4x4 system that is in the Panda, which is very, very capable, more so than some larger off road vehicles, due to its short wheelbase, and very short overhang (Panda that is, and is what the 500 is based on).

  6. I like your overall summation and yes, the looks are a bit odd in places, but I happen to like it, and I love the smaller 500 too. The manual at least in the 500 is way more fun, even with 101HP on tap. I fond the DCCT in the L a little slow for my taste when I go to shift manually. I have an '03 Mazda P5 with the conventional 4spd sport shift auto with lock up torque converter, and it's much more direct in its response to my input, 4spd not withstanding, and thus the mileage suffers.
