Where I live, it's been a requirement, downhill, turn your fronts to the curb, uphill, it's the opposite. In Seattle, it's not required and so many do not but I always did, and use my parking/handbrake all the time.

@Pointlesschan The last car I had with a manual, I learned to do it with the foot parking brake in a Ford Ranger, not easy to do, as you have to have your hand on the release lever, and do the foot dance from clutch to accelerator and release the parking brake, hopefully with little to no roll back on a hill. I miss the dash mounted hand brake in trucks. It is much easier if you have a handbrake IMO.

Yep, and I thought the change was due to going to dual chamber brakes in 1967 where today, the likelihood of total brake failure is not as great as it was before when you either had them, or you didn't, so the e brake was used in an emergency.

@TEDodd Oh I agree. Dual circuits just reduces the chances of total brake failure.

Unless the brake booster fails, then likely the pedal will sink to the floor, after you stop. I've only had that happen once on a '78 Nova many years ago, fortunately I was not going fast at all, but was parking in front of work after a pizza run (delivery driver).

@1crustyoldmsgtretired870 Yep, same here in Tacoma where I live now. Back in the 90's, I got a ticket when I forgot to turn the wheel the appropriate way on the hill alongside the library I was working at, at the time.

SMA is always good, right now with the replacement of the front sub frame in a Subie.

Buddy, in this instance, it's brake, not break, two totally different things. Otherwise, you are correct.

I just shove the gear lever in Park and then yank up on the handbrake, even on level ground.
