Even if a big earthquake or tsunami or hurricane etc were to hit, the internet is smart enough to reroute should certain cell/internet sites go down for a while. As long as your router/gateway (mostly found with wireless internet, such as Verizon or T-Mobile) can reach a node near you, you can get on the internet. The same for wired connections, heck your cell phone, if it can access cellular networks, and you have it activated, can be a hotspot receiver for the laptop/desktop in a pinch. So the internet may not be down for long. The only other major concern is when solar radiation or similar takes out most solid state electronics, then no internet, but I think that is not as likely as compared to an eruption etc.
