  1. Your solution to connect your dot matrix printer to the network is insecure. According to its age, i bet this HP JetDirect 500X doesn't support any protocol to do secure encrypted printing over the network. Instead of using such a device you're better of by buying a USB to parallel port adapter and an Raspberry Pi to make the printer available on the network.

  2. ​ @VeronicaExplains  If you use a Linux machine like the Raspberry Pi I recommend as a print server, communication becomes secure. Because the CUPS server software understands the encrypted protocol. In plain text, only the printer server speaks to the dot matrix printer. But this then no longer happens directly on the network.
