Well, i wouldn't call it "ahead of its time". It had neither multiuser support nor some sort of usable access control. It was a very fast single user operating system with all the new technologies that can be expected for a modern single user system, but the lack of multiuser support was a failure. It wasn't the future because of that. Windows NT, OS/2, Linux and all the different unix flavors already had multiuser support and a usable access control. And Linux even was Open Source and at its beginning to take over the none Windows and Mac OS X market. At that time in 1998, when BeOS was known by the market, IBM announced, that they will switch from OS/2 to Linux. If BeOS had had multiuser support, the history might be different today.
