  1. The future is fossil and synthetic gas. The latter can be produced with nuclear power onshore. Nuclear power on ships does technically work, but as long as nuclear ships are not allowed to call at civil ports, nuclear energy will not be an option.

  2. The neutrons are required to heat up the water which is used to generate energy. A D + D fusion does create a neutron at much lower energy, only 2,45 MeV instead of 14,1 MeV. And on the other side, you also need much higher temperatures and thus more input energy to fusion D + D while having a much lower energy output than a D + T fusion. If fusion failes nuclear fission with new reactor types like the Dual Fluid reactor might be a alternative solution. With this new reactor we will have enough fissible material to produce energy until the sun becomes a red star.
