  1. I like the interior of this BMW so much better than their current all LCD interiors. I also think this is the best six cylinder and the sweet spot for BMW. I don’t need anything faster and with that manual, perfection.

  2. As a young man in 90s, after struggling with a piece of junk Chevy Berretta I bought a Corolla. My life improved for better from than point on. That car never gave me an issue. None. My family has had three Corollas and a Pontiac Vibe and. Toyota Matrix, they have all been fine and reliable. Love the manual in this and reminds me of younger me. Great review as always and best compact in the world, period.

  3. Nissan did a great job improving this truck. I don’t feel it is all new but new enough. Engine and transmission are really good as is ride and how quiet it is. I test drove it and did not like really stiff steering you referenced and lack of LEDs unless you opt for top level trim. I don’t mind and actually prefer manually going into four wheel drive modes, but if you are used to AWD then one may miss that feature. At the end I chose Tacoma because reliability and resale value, but no denying how good looking this Nissan is and great improvements.

  6. Such an under rated vehicle. I am with you, if you don’t need three rows get the Passport. My wife has a Ridgeline and the AWD is really good when you push this thing and relaxing in bad weather. Same as this AWD I think. I wish Honda put tuning knob on their vehicles and regular transmission Shift lever but seems like buttons are what we have to deal with for shifting nowadays. A great vehicle that will pass the test of time. That engine is simply great.

  7. Toyota went all in with this gen Camry. They had heard all the complaints about soft suspension, bad steering, …. So this is best driving Camry ever. Unfortunately party has moved on. People now want SUVs. This is without a doubt best Camry ever. Great review.

  8. Great review of an instant classic. Last of a breed. Naturally aspirated. Gorgeous inside and out. Best implementation of predator grill. If one wants luxury I take this over a Mercedes SL. But if one wants performance I think I still take the Vette. Regardless, indeed a masterpiece that will have best quality and reliability in the world.

  9. We bought a Honda Pilot AWD Touring instead because it looks more square, has all the features and inside works and looks better. They share same platform. Pilot could use bigger screen, otherwise a good platform. Out the door cost us $52,000 US. Eight months and 11,000 miles later it is great and no issues. Best feature: quiet inside with extreme smooth ride. It handled six passengers for Christmas going to restaurants. Space a bit tight for over six footers who sat in out third row for over an hour. Demerits, yeah wish they had a normal shifter. Hate start/stop feature. I recommend to any one interested in a three row.

  10. That is a good looking small SUV. Getting a bit expensive but will last for ever. My sister has a 2009 four cylinder S trim, with 200,000 miles on it. Recently it started eating a little oil, dealer just told her to bring it in for oil change every 3,000 miles instead of 5,000 miles and should last her a while longer. There is a reason these sell in huuugggeee volume.

  11. In that limited trim this looks better than any Lexus. Really anything premium. Great vehicle inside and out. Gorgeous. Toyota doesn’t need to ever change this.

  12. Classy design inside and out. I probably want just the regular gas version if I could afford it with regular non active suspension. Virtually no competitor for this entry out there. Softer than Germans, more powerful engines than Lexus, and Caddy has nothing in this class that is competitive. The interior of this Lincoln may be the prettiest out there.

  13. Prior transmission was six speed. It was not geared right. There are reports of automatic transmission problems, and truck king broke the manual. These tacos are not sorted yet.

  14. If I were 30 years younger this would be my chariot. Love the smooth naturally aspirated engine and even the looks outside are ok big grill and all. I take this over Genesis G70 or BMW just based on quality and reliability, add to that great suspension. Too bad about the infotainment control and lack of manual. This is last of a breed and will last for ever, great review as always.

  15. I have had four Corollas, and two semi Corollas (Matrix and Vibe) for me and family members. These are cars that changed my life. After owning shoebox VW Golf and junk Chevy Beretta, nothing ever went wrong with these things. Never. So those old Corollas paved the way for this. Love Toyota.

  17. Brian that is one of my personal rides, and the one I drive most lol. I am 6’ 2 and seating position is a little strange but man I love it. I have the V6 TRd sport 4x4 and virtually nothing goes wrong with it. Did I Say I love it? Complaints, other than seating position wish the wheel telescoped more lol. If you like old school ride and dynamics it is great and you can accessorize to nth degree.

  18. What an amazing car and even more so what an amazing engine. The world will be a lesser place when this V8 eventually goes away. In the meantime, let’s rejoice in what Lexus stands for. In a world used to recyclable things, Lexus is built to last with old world quality all over. Love that leather instead of all that vinyl vegan leatherette junk in some of today’s cars. Love that engine bay. Lexus keep doing what you do. Magnificent vehicle. Great driving as always Brian. Magnificent engine and display.

  20. The straight six in BMW is the best thing about them. This is the Goldilocks car for BMW brand. Sadly few experience it because the four cylinder turbo is the base. They don’t need M3 with this around. I wish BMW offered this with the manual. In another life I had a Bangle butt 530i non turbo with manual 2004, and like you say engine, Tran is soon, gauge amd seats were perfect. Best handling sedan I have ever owned. Idrive back then was also a mess. And don’t ask me about little or big things that went wrong with that car. You looked bad it and it would go bang and show something wrong. That damn bang chime. Great review.

  22. Great review. To the point. This is how I know a brand is luxury, variety of engines options. Not the only way, but definitely one of the ways. This five series can be had with four and straight six and this crazy V8 and M5. It is really as big a BMW as I want, beautiful and that red wow. I probably just get the straight six if I were in market for one of these. That V8 seems fast but leaves no room in the engine bay. Really scares me to look at that complicated engine bay.

Still, as competent as this is, if I were in the market I go for base X5 and a little more size.   27. To me it is amazing that I see no equivalent from GM. They have a truck and they can make a SUV out of it. Ford has the Bronco and Jeep is there. Nissan should make a one from Frontier. These will sell.

  29. From design perspective, Ford nailed it. Inside and out. Instant classic. Sounds like it is better to drive than Wrangler and doesn’t wonder all over the place. Probably best to wait for teething problems with inside noise issues to subside, but after that it is a must have vehicle. Great review and great job Ford.

  30. Brilliant vehicle. Makes me wonder how GM can replace these with electrics, seeing as their strength is highway cruising for hundreds of miles a day and towing. With electrics having max of 300 miles in perfect environment and then taking long time to charge back, how can these vehicles be replaced?

I think I still want the all wheel drive because traction and they get a jump on every body. For driving pleasure I take a Mustang or Challenger rear wheel drive with stick, but these need all wheel drive and man that engine noise, great review.

  35. That is a very nice interior. Great entry for pocket rocket and all wheel drive, except it’s not so cheap and well I like tougher suspensions so don’t mind kidney busting rides. Not for me, not even close, no manual mehhhhhh. It’s going after Audi crowd. I take a Civic Type R, yeah I give up that gorgeous interior and smooth exterior, but get much more livable space in rear seats, get the magnificent manual, and crazy performance. I am glad this exists, but a type R all the way.

  38. What is truly amazing is more car companies don’t mimic 4-Runner. Give us simple tough midsize SUVs without multitude of screens and infotainments. Look at how Bronco is selling. Amazing that GM has not decided to play in this segment and amp is San has left too. So they sell and sell because there are few alternatives available. Personally when I drove it the nose dive in braking was bad but hey, take the bad with good.

  39. Body on frame platform only make sense if you tow or go serious off-roading. They have worse fuel economy and rougher ride and not fit for normal every day job.

  40.  @Thankyou_3  why is that a big problem? There are many more vehicles sold for on road purposes than for towing or going offroad. Honda, Hyundai, Kia, MErcedes, Audi, BMW, none of them sell vehicles for towing or offroading (Mercedes does sell G wagon). Even Range Rover doesn't sell body on frame. You are making big deal out of nothing. Honda vehicle is not a good fit for you, but they are profitable and have a solid business case.

  41. It is a good looking vehicle, particularly with that beige and black color scheme. The interior like many modern interiors is not my cup of tea with all that minimalism going on. I take a Yukon Denali over this any day but no doubt this has more cache.

  58. This is really an opportunity lost for Toyota. The BMW genes are too obvious, size is close to FRS, and biggest problem, how can you introduce a car to enthusiasts without a manual? Brian how do you compare this Supra to a Mustang 2.3 or. civic type R? Civic has four doors, I have driven a friend’s, and it is a revelation (yes I know it is front wheel drive), but Civic has four doors and more space.

  64. That infotainment screen is too big. The seats may be great but the amount of space they take makes second row unusable.in my opinion not worth the money. You are right they are gimmicks. I get the TRD sport or Off-road 4x4. Really overall I like the prior engine in Tacos but what do you do, turbos are the thing nowadays.

  65. I have heard of engine problems in cold weather with oil dilution. Infotainment as they say is not good to be generous. And the whole transmission lever placement is minivan like. Add to that a CVT, and I personally take a pass. What I like about Honda and RAV-4, they give you same engine in all trims unless you go for hybrid. Compare that to GM and Ford and MOPaR and Koreans who trick you with review of their top trims with stronger engines but their volume sellers have weak engines.

  67. All that capability and no meat on tires. I probably get a Land Cruiser instead as it doesn’t have that strange grill. These probably last easy over 200,000 miles. The mechanical bits are going to last as long as you live. Agreed infotainment is a mess. I think I rather get a F150 with a Coyote for half the price with more modern tech and even more room in back seat with FX4 package 😇.

  71. Brian have you tested Subaru Crosstrek? I am really interested in your thoughts with that vehicle compared to Bronco Sport. My niece really wants that Subaru, I recommended a RAV-4, but I can see how crosstrek and Bronco sport appeals to outdoorsy young people.

  74. Beautiful vehicle, love that monochromatic Caddy logo on the white exterior. The fuel efficiency makes it a no brainer unless you want to hear nice engine noise and can afford the gas. Overall fantastic, but I probably take Yukon because it is a little more conservative inside and out. GM big SUVs rule the land.

  77. Great review. The part that mattered to me is when you said with four passengers the pickup was not the greatest. I mean this is the type of vehicle one buys to carry many people. Why would I want to buy it if it can't get out of its own way when I am carrying my family. I think this is a hard pass, at least in four cylinder form. I take Telluride or Grand Cherokee L any day over this poverty level Explorer.

  79. That thing is legit quick. It can beat Mustangs off the line. Is that a CUV or Hatchback? Great looking vehicle. If you own a home where you can charge this over night and don’t go out of town, it’s a fine vehicle. Essentially a city car. Let’s hope charging time and charging station availability gets better.

Otherwise, I am surprised at how Genesis is pricing these so high. Near 70k US won’t capture market share from Lexus or Germans. They need to be substantially lower priced to capture market. Makes a great used car though 😁

I agree that infotainment controller is a hot mess and center transmission control is just different for sake of being different. It all needs to be balanced against how few sedans we have left and how great dynamically it seems to be. I be happy with this trim and engine. Wish we could get a manual but otherwise really great vehicle.

Hopefully Ford improved reliability as when I checked this vehicle when it was introduced it was a joke and a disaster.

  89. Funny thing is CT5 looks a lot like CTS from far. The Caddy naming convention is stupid. No other way to call it. The red looks striking and this is a good vehicle, and looks ok other than strange rear black C pillar and awkward rear end. I really think we need a electric Caddy sedan and coupe with real names now that GM seems all bought into electrics. I still take last generation CTS-V over this CT5 😈

  94. I really like it in that color and with those wheels and black Chevy logos. Definitely the best large SUVs on the market with a V8. I think 5.3 is solid enough. And good transmission. I don’t understand why it has no fog lights though. And I am with you, the push button gear selector is a get used to thing for me instead of a column mounted Lever, I wish they don’t try to fix problems that don’t exist. Otherwise IMO this really is a home run with independent rear suspension and more room and nicer materials, so much better than Expedition.old school American luxury right here with a great highway ride and isolation 😁

  98. You know I think BMW missed an opportunity with Mini. It didn’t have to be premium, that is BMW. This should max out at 30,000. I also think BMW is really lost in electrification because here is a small platform that probably lends itself to becoming electric, yet it’s all crickets. A Mini is a city runabout. With 250 to 300 miles of electric juice will be great for the cities.

  103. This platform of Grand Cherokee is 9 years old but still looks great and performs great. This trim is out of this world. They should continue making this platform as a classic Grand Cherokee instead of stupid Cheroker and then ell new one next to it. I prefer this also in silver or grey.

  105. Good looking BMW. Is the rear wheel drive model available with manual? I have a 2014 Mustang GT premium manual in garage that weighs 3,400, this small BMW is porky but may be rear wheel drive makes it a bit lighter. Great review and test.

  106. That may be the sexiest truck on the market. I love it so much I ordered one before Christmas. Well actually I just got in line for getting one from allocation my local dealer will get. It will take 3 months for privilege of owning a blue purple (bluecrush) to arrive from Mexico. In Atlanta I agreed to $2,500 market adjustment for total $45,000 before tax for TRD sport 4x4. These have gone up in price but still great vehicles if you are a dinosaur like me. I got the automatic. Great review Brian. These are not fast but well it is a truck so I was not looking for fast.

  108. I think no one will be mad at you for recommending a Highlander. That engine and drivetrain will last for ever. Still, a huge part of getting a SUV is having a soft ride so not good to hear too many crashes come through. Is it class of the field? I take a Telluride or new Jeep Grand Cherokee L over this because ride and looks. Highlander is fine inside but that exterior is not my cup of tea with big grill and fender flares and all those body lines.

  110. I love the exterior. Looks really well executed and wide. I think they will sell all they make because a market segment for this exists. Still, I take the new Ford Maverick if I were buying in this segment because physical buttons. And normal 8 speed automatic. Lack of buttons and knobs inside this cute Hyundai makes it hard for me to ever feel comfy. We’re gauges with no top cover hard to see in sun?

  113. Good looking inside and out. I think it looks even better without the front license plate 😁 I wonder about reliability. Toyota hybrids are proven. Can a Hyundai hybrid be trusted for 10 years? The choice of sequential automatic with six speeds is curious for fuel efficiency but I do like normal automatics.

  114. It is definitely a good looking vehicle, which i think will be mostly used on road. As such it’s competition may be more a Grand Cherokee competitor than a Wrangler or 4-Runner or soon a Bronco. The engine and electrics scare me, but really good for leasing. I think I take a Grand Cherokee over it and those come in so many configurations from outdoorsy to performance to luxurious.

  115. Great review. This is the trim I would get in my part of the world, Georgia, rear wheel drive. Extended range, which really is not that extended. I can not afford it lol. Way out of my league. So love those fat tires. Just make them Michelins. As a Mustang owner I shall never consider this a Mustang 🤣

  117. Leaf springs are now only standard on base Tacos. I believe anything SR5, or TRD sports or off-road have the same coil spring rear suspension.

  121. Your comment about seating position is right on. I sat in these and neither me nor my wife who we were buying a midsize truck for could get comfortable. My head was touching the roof at almost six one and she was struggling with her legs extended at 5 4. We ended up with a higher trim Ridgeline with a so much more refined interior, better engine and six speed and ride. May be Tacos are more reliable and no doubt resale value is amazing. Still try one and live with seating position compromises which are done because of raised floor for off-roading. Off-road they destroy Ridgeline but on road Ridgeline ride is better. Side note: I don’t think 4-runner and Tacoma share same V6 and transmissions are different too.

I take a new Yukon Denali or Escalade or Navigator over this because they simply dwarf it. Sure it may be faster, but who drives a SUV fast? That is what a Vette or Challenger or Porsche are for. Seems to me a shortcoming of platform sharing, no?

  125. Chevy is doing the column stalk in most of their vehicles to shift transmission and it works. I feel like between Bronco and Ranger and F150 and Expedition and Mustang and … Ford uses different shifters for changing automatic transmission. Surely there is some cost savings to be had if they standardize. I think Bronco shifter works best.

Can you imagine the demand for that instead of that current fake BMW Supra?   127. Seems like Chevy is going for function over form with the 2500. But for all that money a bigger screen and some auto cruise features for this high end trim seem appropriate. I like your nuanced and logical view on ride and pros and cons. These beasts serve a purpose for towing for those that need it. I feel like this category of vehicle will be difficult to replace with current state of electric battery.

My problem with Kia and Hyundai are dealer networks. I rather they make Genesis a luxury dealership network instead of pushing nice vehicles through Kia and Hyundai dealer network. I take a new Acura TLX base or type S over this because of dealer network and quality. Are you testing type S soon?

  131. Great review. It may perform amazing and the engineering to make less it than 3000 pounds is out of this world. The exterior design leaves me have mixed feelings if I could afford it which I never can. For that money I think Lambos and Ferraris look so much better. This is just a hodgepodge of design cues.

  137. It looks great but it is in every way other it is deficient to a Tesla model S. I pass and get a gas 3.5 V6 if I want a Genesis or Tesla if I want a non compromised electric with better range, faster, more room, amend a great infrastructure to support it.

  138. Great review. I believe the GM trucks have worst ride. I am not down with that interior, is just not luxurious enough today for high end truck. Otherwise the diesel and transmission are impressive, as is the bed. I think the ride makes me shy away from it and go F150 still.

  140. For the life of me I don’t understand why Caddy stopped making larger CT6 and instead doubled down on smaller CT4 and still not even real room CT5. The CT5 should have been entry level and CT6 the top end. In North America we like big vehicles. Just don’t understand.

Honestly doesn’t matter if it lasts, In this market GM triplets dominate because they are roomy for passengers and luggage and haul and designed beautifully inside and out. This Lexus IS niche product nothing else.

  151. Brian your new format is just as good as always. As for the car, that engine and drivetrain is worst of both worlds. It is not as seamless as a Charger SRT, and not as fast a Tesla. Just confused. I had to smile at fact that passenger seat doesn’t go back enough to fit tall passengers. Supposedly, this is a Swedish car and should fit Swedes who are some of tallest people in the world. Realistically Volvo is owned by Chinese. They use this as a limousine. They don’t care about drivers. They want more rear room passenger space.

Nice naturally aspirated engine, nice regular sequential automatic, regular transmission shift lever, classic regular SUV shape, interior fit for regular North Americans, perhaps Nissan and Honda and Toyota can learn some lessons. Toyota Highlander May go more reliable, but this one’s looks kill it.

  158. I wish Audi had positioned this car differently from start. Something to compete with mini and Miata pricing, with 2.0 turbo and just a manual or simple automatic. No fancy interior. I think Audi tried to position this to compete with Porsche Cayman or Corvette, and at those prices no one takes it seriously. Definitely not in America where for less money you can get a V8 Mustang GT or Challenger HEMI. At least mini is still being built.

  164. I may be in minority but I don’t find this car good looking or necessary. If I am getting a convertible I prefer a softer ride for cruising. I take a Lexus LC 500 with smoother ride and beauty inside and out. Mercedes should go to SL soft riding roadsters and leave GT for hard core sports driving in coupe form. But in any case, visually there is nothing organic here, just comes across as trying too hard, way too much width.

  170. That is a good looking car, but I still take the Civic Si. Why did they top Si? Honda infotainments are not the best in business for sure. My girlfriend in late 80s had a first generation Integra with 1.6 liter. Finely made car but still had no power 🤣. Honda has best manuals.

  173. It looks different in a way the new Honda Civic Si looks. Yes to me it’s about looks. An Aston is about sophistication and old Vantage had it in spades, inside and out. This looks entirely too much in your face front and back. And that tablet inside, damn. I get the DB11 and pass on what was once a beautiful entry level Aston.

  176. Much presence no doubt, yet it keeps making me think how hard washing this vehicle and keeping clean will be and then all those swirls. You have to get ceramic coating or a clear film for this paint. Almost a must. Otherwise beautiful but I want more meat on my wheels too.
