@Korschtal my comment was related to the care Europe in general showed, both locally for yourself and on a bigger scale. The fact EU citizens could obtain settled status, and the EU choose not to weaponise either EU or UK immigration on the whole. I’m thinking my wife was in the opposite place, many of our close friends voted for Brexit in spite of her being French. When challenged, they would say, “we didn’t mean you”, and couldn’t understand why it would be taken as such.

@maartenaalsmeer I expect there will be a period of trying to make Brexit work through this parliament, the end result will be an unsatisfactory failure, but more importantly it will be about capturing the narrative from the populists. Then the next election will rerun the debate. Likely a referendum will be on the manifesto. If the referendum is successful, the UK will apply for candidate status then it’s over to the EU for assessment. Once the assessment is complete it’s up to the council of the EU to decide if they will give the UK candidate status. I can’t see Labour doing more than try to make Brexit work this Parliament, though this may include closer alignment.

@Korschtal ah, I probably should have used a different form of words. I was thinking of more talk down in the context of “talk down some from a fight or suicide”. Yes, my government viewing the EU citizens, many of which were family of UK citizens, the rest were important members of communities and productive economically and culturally, is something I will never, ever forgive.

@homolgus1 my seat is supposedly safe, but recent polling has suggested it could flip red. Currently Tories have a 20k majority…

The issue is not enough people in the UK care about these things. They assume democracy only happens once every five years and is inconvenient for them. Getting the average Brit to actually think about specific policies is hopeless.

@Korschtal the EU, and several member states, tried to talk the UK down too.

You have to remember, the government at the time was talking up holding the 4 million EU citizens as bargaining chips to the rapacious delight of the right wing “winners”. A terrible time…
