  14.  @paullegend6798  I disagree, have you ever been a serving police officer? Have you ever had to deal with policing of volatile crowds? I doubt it. He’s clearly making a political point trying to walk into a stop the war protest surrounded by cameras. To me the officer has gone out of his way to explain his decision, the powers he has and the possible consequences of non compliance. The legality of this is a matter for courts, not politicians, not the media. Or is this the correct level of political interference in the police?

This is just a hyperbolic way of taking more rights and protections from British people to keep our corporate masters like musk Happy. It’s a bit sad how few people seem to follow politics. It’s literally current affairs in the US right now with the Visa issue. Musk wants to bring in immigrants who are lower paid than equivalent US workers.

  18. I agree with pretty much Marina said here except the paying politicians more. Someone from my background would struggle to earn even 2/3rds of there wage of an MP and it would ensure the Oxford dominance of politics continues. They do get a massive bunch of benefits like expenses on top of the salary which can put them in the top 1%, so can’t really say they are hard done by. The voting system is probably my top change, with simplification of tax as number two. And party and think tank funding as number three.

The conservatives (under Mays hostile environment policy) fucked the system to feed this issue. Rather than fix it (and it used to work fairly well), they us it to keep people from thinking about all the other stuff not working, like the economy, the NHS, trains, etc

  25.  @cf8545  that’s not how the asylum process works (and indeed any application process). In the exclusion of other routes rocking up in boats is, under international law (and domestic law) legal. They only become illegal when the claim fails. Hence most people think it should be obvious to set up processing centres in safe places and protect our boarders from uncontrolled entry and prevent people dying unnecessarily. I don’t think either side are far apart here. The problem is, rather than dealing with the issues, the government makes more unenforceable and likely illegal laws for the front page splash.

  29.  @Toecutter875  I was a cop so it’s not a hypothetical for me. Whether I got involved would have depended on what I needed to be doing, whether I had been drinking, etc. I did get involved in some things off duty, but it was usually better to just witness and then write up a statement later, or submit some intel. The fact this turned violent I’m guessing means the cop felt he had to intervene. The main point is the service made a proper hash of the investigation.

Also, are wrong about the books they burnt. The books destroyed was anything about politics, literature, or science the 1930s party didn’t like and found incompatible with their ideology. They burnt books penned by Einstein for example. It’s an odd defence of the violence to be honest.

Policing here is by consent in spite of the political agitators on both sides, left and right. The only experience most people have with police is when at school doing station tours or meeting the community Bobby, at a summer fair, or some banter outside a club, especially away from London. Being working class doesn’t mean police target them, working class is not a synonym for criminal. Orwell was a deep thinker, but he was also seemed very confused in his attitude to policing due to his experiences as a policeman in colonial Burma where he hated, and was hated by, the locals.

  41.  @guidobolke5618  no worries, it’s good to chat, I’m sure others will have different opinions, and all view points are pretty subjective. A bi issue with these rioters is they failed at the ballot box in our recent general election and chose violence. Ironically the Labour Party is seen as pandering to these anti immigration supporters by a lot of members with its immigration policies. There has been zero opportunity to implement policy as we have only had a government for one month. Also, the timing has been suspicious. It’s very coincidental that the right wing mobilises the moment a left wing government comes to power. Unfortunately when people use violence against the state, the only way any state can respond is in kind. You have to remember that the initial incident, where three girls were murdered, was seen as a quick response from police and more importantly concerned citizens. There were genuine hero’s in that initial event who saved more lives by endangering there own. Rioting was never a way of expressing anything, particularly as many of those first responding officers were on the front lines in the riots. The areas that were attacked where were close to the murders and impact the people involved. The rioters are attacking police mainly because they are in the way of the intended targets initially, or were the types who enjoy fighting with the police. The police do enforce laws, but up until the most recent tory government, most laws were broadly seen as necessary across the political spectrum. The actual criminal element in society is pretty small as a proportion of the population, and reoffending rates are pretty high. So a few individuals have an oversized footprint on society. Obviously, there are groups that this doesn’t fit so well, particularly non-white communities, who generally get a more than their fair share of police attention, often unnecessarily.
