  1. Police can put themselves on duty at anytime it’s necessary. But they don’t have too. Young cops often do, older cops are just trying not to get involved.

  2.  @Toecutter875  I was a cop so it’s not a hypothetical for me. Whether I got involved would have depended on what I needed to be doing, whether I had been drinking, etc. I did get involved in some things off duty, but it was usually better to just witness and then write up a statement later, or submit some intel. The fact this turned violent I’m guessing means the cop felt he had to intervene. The main point is the service made a proper hash of the investigation.
