The conservatives (under Mays hostile environment policy) fucked the system to feed this issue. Rather than fix it (and it used to work fairly well), they us it to keep people from thinking about all the other stuff not working, like the economy, the NHS, trains, etc

@cf8545 that’s not how the asylum process works (and indeed any application process). In the exclusion of other routes rocking up in boats is, under international law (and domestic law) legal. They only become illegal when the claim fails. Hence most people think it should be obvious to set up processing centres in safe places and protect our boarders from uncontrolled entry and prevent people dying unnecessarily. I don’t think either side are far apart here. The problem is, rather than dealing with the issues, the government makes more unenforceable and likely illegal laws for the front page splash.
