  4.  @mikeedwards1096  its actually when it breaks UK law, as member states ratify EU law into national law and it doesn’t have any legal force until then. It can also act if member states fail to implement a law as per its obligations under charter. Laws would be passed by the UK parliament and we had a veto to block any laws we didn’t like. This is because member states parliaments are sovereign. Tbh, the UK usually played a lead part in drafting the laws too, as our lawyers were consider some of the very best in Europe. Treaties are agreed between governments in accordance with our elected representative style system. They have never been subject to referendum and have existed in this way since antiquity. Not sure why this requires direct democracy, you elect the government to govern, not to serve.
