As someone who works in R&D, The research sector, which is one of our bigger sectors, works better with access to horizon. But then it also works better with better access to undergraduate studies in STEM (which have been forced to be cut back year on year for 40 years), and Post Graduate access in programme via systems like Erasmus. If we want to keep a research led economy, best to start spending money like our neighbours in the EU do investing in these futures. They don’t though, they want the UK to be a sweat shop.

A similar level of entitlement as the Brexiteers. rejoining may be an option in the future, It feels like a long term process even for the UK (or what’s left) even to make the decision to try. We need to accede to the whole EU entry package. Then alignment to meet criteria, which will probably require some level of constitutional reform. Out application then it needs to be accepted by all member states. Personally I think it means waiting for the over 50s (at the time of the referendum) to die out to be honest.

Schools are over subscribed, roads are over congested, water systems and sewers are failing, police stations are smaller and inadequate for the current population let alone large jumps in population. Personally I think STEM should be tax funded on the caveat the person is liable for the course cost if they drop out. Schooling is variable between the best and worst. The national curriculum is designed to do I don’t know what, certainly not critical thinking.

However, If you can’t implement it them due to the electorate being unconvinced, then you need to moderate them. There needs to be a level of pragmatism and practically. Labour sacrificed what was achievable for their ideals and the leader. They could have added some principled legislation, stopped the grift of the Tories, made the country better just by some fairly basic legislation and reversing the continuing decline. What’s the issue with stating the ultimate plan is x, but at the moment y and z are where we are focusing on right now? Is this sacrificing your ideals? Everything in life is about some form of compromise. What Corbyn is good at is representing his consistency, and talking to people no one else with. Easily the most principled representative in the HoC in this respect, I respect him for this. However he was incapable of compromise, or the art of dealing with other people. Therefore he was a terrible politician.

But that doesn’t mean you can just print money infinitely as it needs a level of intrinsic worth (subjectively decided by “markets” opinion since the gold standard was dropped hence the volatility (I liked the monkey comparison as it fits the market well)). The strength of the pound has been slowly eroded by many things and our ability to repay debt compromised by the Years of austerity which have reduced spend a little, but reduced the tax receipts more. This was something George Osborne couldn’t quite get his head around. We had a AAA credit rating as a country under Labour which allowed us to take cheap debt, now we don’t. So the cost of borrowing (the amount required to service the debt is increasing). Countries have issues when they can’t service debt like the near collapse of Greece, this is why policy needs to be funded. The issue with the Truss mini budget was she hadn’t worked out how to service the debt accrued from the tax cuts. The debt itself was not a significant issue per se. She was just reckless and feckless amd impulsive and without a brain in her body. If Labour want to increase spending, they need to identify how it’s being paid for, either through taxation or borrowing, and if borrowing how they will service that debt. That was the point of the comment. I doubt they are idiots and are taking advice for some of the more sensible economists like Mariana Mazzucato, so hopefully we can get a bit more sensible spending. Honestly I can’t see a way of Labour doing anything without increasing borrowing, but the challenge comes on how to service the debt. The types of things Labour want to do won’t pay off overnight. Currently they haven’t put out too much and keep changing policies (in response to the Sunak governments “direction”), so it’s impossible to know if they have a good plan, or what it will look like before the next election. Tory’s have little understanding of anything past there own self interest.

  524. Simply put, if they tried it would be unlawful. The Scottish Parliament (rightly or wrongly) voted to put there sovereign decisions in Westminster. If they act unlawfully, Spain will block ascension to the EU as they only accept the premise of Scottish independence on the grounds it follows a legal process.

  555. The Tories have caused more financial crisis in my life time than Labour. Why do Labour get blamed for the financial crisis in 2008? Literally it was a global crisis due to the prevailing economic theory being show as wrong. Black Wednesday and Trussecomics were pure Tory.
