@resiplayerz false equivalency fallacy, that’s not a single unified market.

@resiplayerz no it wasn’t, it was all things to all people. We were supposed to stay in the customs union according to vote leave

@MrNorthWales that’s an idiotic comment, you can still trade globally.

@resiplayerz yes, and we have far less leverage and soft power because of it. Well done. Genius.

@maxdavis7722 the number one issue for Brexit voters was about not wanting foreigners making laws affecting us. It was packaged as sovereignty. Ultimately it’s still xenophobia. So don’t try and say we got nothing out of Europe, we got plenty, you just fell for the spin where successive governments blamed failed domestic policies on the EU.

@BenMeddeb it was built on trade. Britain invaded other countries to facilitate this. It was the driving force behind many of the conquests by the various Empires of the period. India, China, Africa, etc, it was about securing natural resources. Both India and Rhodesia where largely conquered by private interests.

@BenMeddeb but how is this different for most other nations in history? For example, all nations, not just European ones, traded slaves. The main traders were the African nations that got super wealthy from the practice. And all of those traded slave more recently than Britain as it banned the practice first. Indeed if it wasn’t for Britain, slavery would still be endemic in the world as this was achieved by the British via political and military actions. So the British Empire wasn’t entirely devoid of any merit.

@BenMeddeb can you list the countries with laws that outlawed slavery prior to Britain? I’m only aware of China briefly, England (kinda), and France Briefly. So much for a myth. It wasn’t common in some nations, but that’s not the same thing. The industrialisation of slavery was tragic error, which is why the abolitionist movement was formed and ended the practice. Which other countries ended the practice? I appreciate the Empire was in many ways terrible, but you need to acknowledge the fact that britain was involved in slavery, it also did more than any other to end it.
