@tisFrancesfault the majority of those people inheriting farmland are not farm owners. Yes, the super wealth are able to avoid tax, but the forgiven office is looking to close loopholes for crown dependencies which may address this. The rest are multi millionaires who are getting something unearned. This is a storm in a teacup issue. The real issue is the lack of replacement subsidies promised by Johnson as leader of the leave campaign and then never implemented.

@fvefve12 surely inheriting a farm which is a business, you should,d give a bit of thought of what you are going to be doing and how the costs will be payed. This would be the same as inheriting any other business.

Inheritance tax doesn’t affect the farmer, it affect the inheritor. This isn’t a tax on farmers despite the narrative. Farming isn’t profitable and hasn’t been for decades, made worse by the removal of subsidies by leaving the EU. We should be subsiding farms as a Uk farm will cost more to run than a third world one. If farms were profitable, the inheritors would be able to afford the inheritance tax. Edit: profitable for small farmers.

@Matt-vq8fg the left want to bash Labour, and the right want to bash Labour 🤷♂️. Reality be damned. I personally think that farming should just pay inheritance tax at the same rate as everyone else. The fact that some farm businesses may struggle to pay back the inheritance tax is another issue about profitability that desperately needs to be addressed. But this is due to lost subsidies and consolidated bargaining by supermarkets, not this policy.
