There is no such thing as a closed border and that is not what she said. What the Right calls an open border policy is our asylum laws that have been in place for over 40 years. Learn our laws and the process.

We had an 11 year decline in southern border crossing to the lowest point in 50 years prior to Trump and his polices. By 2019 Trumps policies doubled the number of people crossing the southern border to 977,000. He only saw a reduction for the first 9 months of 2020 due to covid, before it went back to a 20 year monthly high in October of 2020. It has remained a 20 year high and increasing ever since under Trumps failed policies and Title 42.

@paulaharvey1171 And out of those 8 million how many qualified to stay under our asylum laws and how many were placed in expedited removal and returned again with no penalty in place under title 42? How many were processed under title 42 and how many under title 8? What's the difference in enforcement and penalty under title 8 and title 42? Where are your deportation numbers? There is a difference in cutting and pasting data from Right wing sites and being informed and understanding the data in full context, that the Right refuses to acknowledge.

It also suspends 8 US code 1325; the misdemeanor that carries a civil penalty for crossing the border illegally. And 8 US code 1326; stiffer penalties for crossing the border. That leaves out any legal penalty or deterrent for those crossing and stops legal asylum, with few exceptions under title 42. Makes it difficult to enforce immigration laws when Republicans are fighting in court to undermine our legal enforcement. With title 42 suspending enforcement that means many immigrants recross multiple times causing apprehension numbers to be inflated. The current rate of multiple returns was about 40% of border crossers.

@paulaharvey1171 Yes that information is irrelevant as there was no enforcement due to Right wing policies. Immigrants were free to recross the border multiple times after they have been deported without penalty due to Right wing policies. Try reading my statement and having the ability to understand. Your numbers are irrelevant without the context as to why those numbers are high.
