  1. Mercedes has only just caught up with Audi's side protection. When it senses an imminent side impact, it raises that side of the car's air suspension to maximum height using actuators. This then makes the crash force go through the door sill, which is much stronger, instead of the door itself. Mercedes has only just announced something similar on the new S-Class.
