If you compared Uber and Airbnb with wework as an investor you're an idiot. Uber and Airbnb own none of the assets necessary to operate, Uber doesn't own the cars, Airbnb doesn't own apartments. So the risk of investing in the wrong area is completely offloaded to the people driving for Uber/renting over Airbnb, same goes with expansion, it's not directly paid by the company. Wework on the other hand has to aquire all these long term rent deals just to start, risk having made investments in the wrong areas, having to deal with the costs in case they're not used Also, market share works differently. Uber being dominant is very advantageous while wework doesn't benefit outside dominating individual areas
