  2. Where is the irony with that? One critic point was precisely that they were cheap, mass produced ornamentation instead of craftmanship. Putting something cheap on something cheap with the intention to make it look more expensive. It wasnt that they cost so much the made the inside worse, they were just seen as fake. You have to consider that back then those buildings weren't historical but contemporary and not much different than someone trying to modernize a house from their (grand)parent's generation

  3. It seems to me that mose older building lose their historic face or get torn down completely due to modernization not being compatible with older building practices
