Sure, contact can build immunity but regularly coming into contact with new diseases can eventually lead to a mutation in a human host, making a mundane illness deadly. That's why ever since we've had civilization and trade plagues have been a quite regular phenomenon. Before that a strong illness would have killed the infected before it could spread
