  2.  @davidroetman3168  the cold war never ended in a hot direct war. You also can't compare ancient Rome which had no fast way of travel with a world where a nuclear warhead can be sent around the globe within a short time. Ancient Rome always had troubles at the border but because of no planes they could easily be stopped before getting in too deep.
